Judge Paternoster embarked on his distinguished legal career after earning his Juris Doctor from Gonzaga University School of Law in 1976.

He served in various capacities, including private practice attorney, assistant attorney general, deputy district attorney, and municipal judge, before being elected as the district attorney for the Eighth Judicial District of New Mexico.

In April 2006, Governor Bill Richardson appointed him to the Eighth Judicial District Court, where he served with distinction until his retirement on July 17, 2015.

During his tenure, Judge Paternoster was retained by voters in 2008 and 2014, reflecting the public’s trust in his judicial capabilities.

His legal acumen and commitment to justice earned him the respect of colleagues, attorneys, and litigants. Known for his meticulous preparation and thoughtful decision-making, he approached every case with impartiality and a profound understanding of the human condition.

Beyond his courtroom achievements, Judge Paternoster was a tireless advocate for his community.
